Early Life and Education

Born on August 20, 1962, in Yorkshire, England, Martin John Cook initially aspired to become a veterinarian, but his struggles with biology led him astray. From the age of 11, he delved into writing prose and poetry, which eventually blossomed into a passion for drama. After completing school, he pursued a degree in theater and film at university while simultaneously working as an actor and scriptwriter. A severe motorcycle accident halted his studies and career, but during his recovery, he stumbled upon an advertisement for a theater directing course. To his surprise, he discovered his true calling.

Career Beginnings

Cook honed his craft as an intern at Harold Pinter's theater studio and as a playwright at the Clwyd Theatre in Wales. He also established his own theater company, Rough as Guts, and collaborated with BBC television and radio. Gradually, his interest in Eastern European drama intensified, ultimately leading him to emigrate to Russia in 2006.

Moscow Calling

Arriving in Moscow, Cook immersed himself in the city's vibrant theater scene. He participated in projects such as "Clean Useless Beauty" and "Theatre of Love," directed the play "Mild Pain" at "Teatr.doc," and consulted for The English Chamber Theatre. As the artistic director of Queen's English Theatre, he employed the "English through Art" method, utilizing theater as a vehicle for language instruction. Additionally, he provided voiceovers for videos, audiobooks, and video games, and collaborated with BBC Russia and Channel One on documentaries and television programs.

Flying Banana Children Theatre

Cook founded the Flying Banana Children Theatre, a troupe of English-speaking actors performing works by British authors such as Robert Stevenson's "Treasure Island" and William Shakespeare's "Macbeth" and "A Midsummer Night's Dream." His passion for live music inspired him to incorporate rock, classical, and other "non-childish" genres into the performances. Growing alongside his own children, the theater became a reflection of his belief in the power of the arts to enrich young minds.

Film and Television

Despite not considering himself an actor, Cook has occasionally appeared in films, including the thriller "Trap" (2008), "Election Day 2" (2009), and "Mosgaz. Case No. 5: Operation "Satan"" (2019). In 2022, he interviewed Russian rappers Noggano (Basta) and QP for his role as editor-in-chief of the American CNM Channel.

Personal Life

Cook's personal life has also intertwined with Russia. He is married to Natalia, and together they have two sons. The family also includes a Jack Russell Terrier named Jack. Despite being fluent in English, Cook has chosen not to learn Russian. Instead, he views his ignorance of the language as a sanctuary, shielding him from the constant bombardment of information in Moscow's public spaces.

Present Day

Martin John Cook continues to be an active figure in the Moscow theater community. Among his recent television appearances was the 2023 detective series "The Spy," where he played a retired FSB officer who is targeted by a former CIA operative.
