Marty Pavelich: A Legendary Detroit Red Wing

Early Life and Career

Marty Pavelich, a Canadian hockey player and left-wing forward, was born on November 6, 1927, in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario. His hockey career began in the junior hockey leagues, where he played for the Galt Red Wings. After three impressive seasons, Pavelich signed with the Detroit Red Wings.

Detroit Red Wings

In the 1947-48 season, Pavelich started the year with the Indianapolis Capitals, the Red Wings' American Hockey League affiliate. After 26 games, he was called up to Detroit and quickly earned a regular spot. That season, the Red Wings reached the Stanley Cup Finals.

Stanley Cup Triumphs

In 1950, Pavelich played a key role in Detroit's Stanley Cup victory and earned his first NHL All-Star Game appearance. Over the next five years, he would win three more Stanley Cups and make the All-Star Game three additional times.

Later Career and Retirement

After winning his fourth Stanley Cup in 1955, Pavelich played two more seasons with Detroit before retiring from hockey in 1957.

Passing

Tragically, Pavelich passed away on June 28, 2024, at the age of 96. He was diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) a month before his death.
