Biography of Martin Sheridan

Martin Sheridan was an American athlete, three-time champion of the Summer Olympic Games. He was born on March 28, 1881, in Ireland and immigrated to the United States at the age of 16.

Early Career and Olympic Success

Sheridan won his first Olympic gold medal at the 1904 Olympics in St. Louis in the discus throw, where he also set a new Olympic record. Additionally, he finished fourth in the shot put. Two years later, Sheridan participated in the Intercalated Olympic Games in Athens. He became the champion in both the shot put and discus throw, and also won a silver medal in the high jump, long jump, and stone throw. However, these awards are considered unofficial as the International Olympic Committee does not recognize these competitions.

Success at the 1908 Olympics

At the 1908 Olympics in London, Sheridan became a two-time champion in both the discus throw in the free style and the Greek style. He also won third place in the standing long jump. He finished ninth in the triple jump, 16th in the standing high jump, and his result in the shot put is unknown.

Life after Athletics and Death

After retiring from his athletic career, Sheridan became a police officer. Unfortunately, he passed away from pneumonia on March 27, 1918, just one day before his 37th birthday.
