Martins Dukurs is a Latvian skeleton athlete, born on March 31, 1984, in Riga, Latvia. He is widely regarded as one of the most successful athletes in the history of skeleton racing.
Achievements
Throughout his career, Martins Dukurs has achieved numerous remarkable accomplishments. He is a two-time Olympic silver medalist, winning the silver medals at the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics and the 2014 Sochi Winter Olympics.
Dukurs is also a five-time world champion, having won the world championships in 2011, 2012, 2015, 2016, and 2017. In addition, he has claimed the title of European champion eight times, winning the European Championships in 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016, and 2017.
Furthermore, Martins Dukurs has been incredibly successful in the overall World Cup standings, becoming an eight-time winner of the World Cup. He holds the record for the most World Cup victories among both men and women.
Early Life and Career
Martins Dukurs started his skeleton career in 1998 and quickly rose to prominence in the sport. His father, Dainis Dukurs, a former director of the Sigulda bobsleigh and skeleton track, became Martins' coach. Martins' older brother, Tomass Dukurs, also pursued a professional career in skeleton racing.
Olympic Journey
At the 2010 Vancouver Olympics, Martins Dukurs led the competition after three runs, narrowly ahead of Canadian athlete Jon Montgomery by 0.18 seconds. Unfortunately, in the final run, Montgomery managed to surpass Dukurs by 0.25 seconds, and Martins had to settle for the silver medal. Tomass Dukurs finished in fourth place at the same event.
In the 2014 Sochi Olympics, Dukurs was once again considered a top contender. The battle for gold came down to a fierce competition between Martins Dukurs and Russian athlete Alexander Tretiakov. Tretiakov emerged as the winner, with Dukurs falling short by 0.81 seconds. Tomass Dukurs finished in fourth place for the second time.
Personal Life and Legacy
Martins Dukurs is not only known for his exceptional athletic achievements but also for his dedication and sportsmanship. He has been honored with numerous awards, including being named the Latvian Athlete of the Year five times (2010, 2011, 2013-2015). Dukurs was also awarded the Order of the Three Stars, Vth degree, and the Cross of Recognition, IIIrd degree.
