The Woman Who Couldn't Lose Weight
For years, 71-year-old Mary Clancy struggled with her weight. Despite dieting and exercising, she couldn't understand why she couldn't shed the pounds. Her weight reached a staggering 160 kg (352 lbs).
A Shocking Discovery
In November 2016, Clancy developed blood clots in her legs and was admitted to the hospital. Doctors assumed that her obesity was the cause, but a MRI revealed a startling truth: Clancy had a massive tumor growing in her abdomen.
A Giant Tumor
The tumor, which had grown to the size of an adult human, weighed 63.5 kg (140 lbs). It was a stage 1 cancerous ovarian cyst. "My first thought was the movie 'Alien' with Sigourney Weaver," said Clancy.
Life-Saving Surgery
In a five-hour surgery, doctors at Lehigh Valley Hospital in Allentown removed the massive ovarian cyst, along with 18 kg (40 lbs) of excess skin and repaired Clancy's abdomen.
A New Body
Clancy's weight dropped from 160 kg to 68 kg (150 lbs) after surgery, and she continues to lose weight. She still can't believe the true cause of her "obesity."
A New Beginning
Today, Clancy weighs 59.9 kg (132 lbs). She hopes to lose even more weight and enjoy the spring weather in her new, slimmer body.
