Reunited Friendships and Courage in the Face of Adversity

Lost and Found

British school friends Joanna Meadows and Neil Vins lost touch for over a decade, reconnecting only after Neil was diagnosed with a brain tumor. Meadows, a 21-year-old hairdresser from Gloucester, learned of her friend's devastating diagnosis through Facebook and immediately reached out.

A Life-Altering Diagnosis

Neil, a former personal trainer, had his life dramatically altered after undergoing emergency surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation treatment. Despite the challenges, Meadows remained a steadfast friend, shaving her head in solidarity. Neil had endured two brain tumors—one affecting his vision and the other leaving him immobile.

Unwavering Support

"Neil and I met in kindergarten," Meadows recalled. "We lost touch after school, but I was devastated when I heard about his diagnosis. I contacted him on Facebook and offered him a ride home."

Their friendship deepened as they reconnected. "He was a healthy personal trainer living life to the fullest in Crete," Meadows said. "This came as a huge shock to him, his family, and everyone who knew him."

Hope Amidst Adversity

Despite his illness, Vins maintained a positive outlook. "Neil's illness has brought us closer than ever over the last two and a half years," Meadows said. "We are now best friends. I speak to him daily and always drop in for a visit when I can."

Battling a Second Tumor

A second tumor near the front of Vins' brain further shattered his health. "We all felt helpless as we watched him go through another round of grueling treatment," Meadows said. "His face was frozen, his body was swollen from steroids."

Finding Inspiration

Seeing Vins' strength, Meadows decided to shave her hair to raise funds for Teenage Cancer Trust, a charity that supported him. "My hair means a lot to me, but after what Neil has been through, I was determined," she said. "I had thought about doing a sponsored walk, but I needed to do something that would really get people's attention."

The Power of Friendship

Vins has written a book about his ordeal, "Powerful Beyond Measure," to be released in February 2015. "Joanna's friendship has been a lifeline throughout my illness," he said. "Her texts, calls, and visits have helped me through incredibly difficult times."

Raising Awareness

Brain tumors are one of the most common cancers in the UK, with around 5,000 new cases of malignant brain tumors diagnosed each year. They can spread rapidly to other parts of the brain and spinal cord, as in Vins' case.
