Early Years and EducationMaryam Sagitova was born in 1923 in Tomsk, Siberia. Her family moved to Almaty when she was eight years old. In 1937, her father was arrested and executed during the Stalinist purges, leaving Maryam an orphan at age fourteen. Despite these hardships, she excelled in school and pursued a career in education.
After graduating from teacher training courses, Sagitova taught in primary schools. In 1941, she enrolled in the Kazakh State Agricultural Institute, where she earned a degree in 1945. During the war years, she worked as a nurse in a hospital while continuing her studies.
A Blossoming Career
In 1952, Sagitova completed her graduate studies and began working at the Almaty Pedagogical Institute. She became an assistant professor and later a docent after defending her doctoral dissertation. It was here that she embarked on the defining work of her life: hybridizing lilacs, a passion that had ignited in her childhood.
Creating a Lilac Paradise
On the institute's agrobiological station, Sagitova and her husband established a lilac nursery and a unique lilac garden. Her lilacs were renowned for their captivating colors and intoxicating fragrances. She often said, "Even with my eyes closed, I can recognize my varieties by their scent, the way a mother knows her child."
Tragic End
Maryam Sagitova passed away in 2001 at the age of 79. Her death was precipitated by the news that her beloved lilac garden was being destroyed to make way for private homes. She had spent countless hours nurturing and tending to her lilacs, and their loss was an immeasurable blow.
