Biography of Mariam Vakhidova

Early Life and Education

Mariam Vakhidova is a Russian publicist, journalist, and socio-political activist. She was born in Kazakhstan and graduated from the N.K. Krupskaya Semipalatinsk Pedagogical Institute in 1985, majoring in Philology. She started her career in education, working as a senior pioneer leader and eventually becoming the director of a school in Ush-Biik Jarminsky District.

Socio-Political Activism

Vakhidova has been involved in socio-political activities since 1977. In November 1990, she attended the First All-National Congress of the Chechen People as a guest, where she met Jokhar Dudayev, the future president of Chechnya. She became an active supporter of Dudayev and was introduced as a member of the Executive Committee of the Congress. During the August 1991 events in Moscow, she stood in front of the White House during the siege and addressed tank crews in Chechen language, in case any Chechen tank crews were leading the column. The next day, she spoke to democracy defenders from the balcony of the White House.

Journalism and Research

Vakhidova is an independent journalist and a researcher of the works of famous Russian writers such as Alexander Pushkin, Mikhail Lermontov, and Leo Tolstoy. She has discovered "Chechen traces" in the biographies of Lermontov and Tolstoy. Her articles have been published in various journals, including "Science and Religion," "Siberian Lights," "Vaynak," and "Nana." She has also authored numerous political, journalistic, and research articles.

International Engagement

As an expert, Vakhidova has participated in numerous political talk shows on central television channels in Russia, such as "We" with Vladimir Pozner, "Freedom of Speech" with Yevgeny Kiselyov, Sergei Sorokin, and Savik Shuster, and "Domino Principle" with Yevgeny Khangai and Yevgeny Ischeev. She has also appeared in documentaries, news programs, and films, including "Chechen Trap" and documentaries by Al Jazeera.

Later Career and Achievements

Since 2004, Vakhidova has participated in international scientific conferences and congresses on Russian literature held in Moscow, Pyatigorsk, Makhachkala, Beijing, and other cities. In 2012, she personally funded and erected a monument in the town of Bezhanytsy in the Pskov region to honor General Alexander Chechensky, a hero of the War of 1812. She is also the author of books such as "Alexander Chechensky: That's Him, the Hero!" and "The Terrible Fate of Father and Son" about the Chechen origins of M. Lermontov and L. Tolstoy.

In 2014, Vakhidova organized and conducted the International Lermontov Scientific Conference in Grozny, titled "Lermontov. Russia. Caucasus: Movement in Time," and released a collection of conference materials in October. In recognition of her work on the book "Alexander Chechensky" as a historian and enlightener, she was awarded the commemorative medal "70 Years of Victory" by the Presidium of the Karachay-Cherkess Public Organization of Veterans (Pensioners) on May 9, 2015. She is also a laureate of the second All-Russian Competition of Journalistic Works of the ONF Foundation, "Truth and Justice."

Mariam Vakhidova is a mother of two children and currently resides in Grozny since 2006.
