Early Life and Career

Omid Shojaei, an Iranian footballer and midfielder, was born in Shiraz but spent most of his life in Abadan and Tehran. He made his professional football debut in 2002 with Sanat Naft, playing in 12 matches. In 2003, he moved to Saipa, another Iranian club.

International Career

In 2004, Shojaei debuted for the Iran national team. He was part of the squad for the 2006 World Cup, playing one match against Angola. He played more frequently in the 2010 World Cup qualifiers and was a key player during the 2014 World Cup qualification campaign. He played in all three group stage matches in Brazil. Shojaei also represented Iran at the Asian Cups in 2007, 2011, and 2015, scoring a goal against Bahrain in the latter.

European Club Career

In 2006, Shojaei moved abroad to join Sharjah in the UAE. His performances caught the attention of Spanish club Osasuna, who signed him in 2008. He made his La Liga debut in August 2008 and became a regular substitute. After a successful four years, he was released in June 2013 and joined Las Palmas in the Spanish Segunda Division.

Greek Super League

After the World Cup, Shojaei signed for Greek Super League side Panionios in 2016. He had a successful debut season and extended his contract until June 2018. However, the agreement was terminated in December 2017, and he joined AEK Athens three days later.

Controversies and Activism

In 2009, Shojaei supported the Iranian Green Movement and wore a green bracelet during a World Cup qualifier. He has also spoken out against corruption in Iranian football and child sexual abuse. Shojaei is a vocal advocate for lifting the ban on women attending football matches in Iran.

Later Club Career

After his stint with AEK Athens, Shojaei played for Al-Shahaniya in Qatar. In 2022, he returned to Iran and joined Gol Gohar Sirjan.
