Early Life and Career at Atalanta

Born in Bergamo, Italy, Massimo Donati began his football career at his hometown club Atalanta. He rose through the youth ranks and made his professional debut for the senior team at the age of 18. After three seasons with Atalanta, Donati attracted the attention of AC Milan, who paid €15 million for his services in 2001.

Time at AC Milan and Loan Spells

Donati joined AC Milan as one of the most promising young midfielders in Italy. However, he failed to make a significant impact during his year-long stay at the club. To gain more playing time, Donati was sent on loan to four different clubs over a three-year period: Parma, Torino, Sampdoria, and Messina.

Return to Atalanta and Move to Celtic

In 2006, Donati returned to his former club Atalanta. He spent another season there before Scottish giants Celtic signed him for £3.5 million in 2007. Initially, Donati was a key player for Celtic, but he gradually lost his place in the starting lineup and expressed his desire to return to Italy.

Move to Bari and Palermo

In 2009, Donati joined Bari, who had just gained promotion to Serie A. He made 32 appearances, scoring one goal and providing three assists in the 2009/10 season. In January 2012, Donati signed a contract with Palermo, where he played until 2014.

Later Career at Hamilton Academical

After leaving Palermo, Donati moved to Scotland once more, this time joining Hamilton Academical. He has been playing for the club since 2016, helping them secure promotion to the Scottish Premiership in 2018.
