Seven-year-old Matilda Jones, from Doncaster, became an instant hero when she pulled an enormous sword from a lake where legend has it King Arthur's mythical sword, Excalibur, lies beneath the waters.
The Legendary Discovery
While paddling in a rowboat with her family on Cornwall's Dozmary Pool, Matilda spotted something metallic in the water. Her father, Paul, had shared the legend of King Arthur and Excalibur with his daughters before the trip and initially thought he was retrieving a piece of old fencing. To his astonishment, Paul realized Matilda had found something far more valuable.
"It was a blazing hot day, and Matilda asked to go out in the rowing boat," said Paul. "She was standing up in the water up to her waist when she said she could see a sword." The sword measures an impressive 4 feet (120 cm) in length, which Paul noted was "exactly the same height as Matilda."
The Quest for the Throne
Although the discovery has sparked speculation about Matilda's potential claim to the British throne, Paul believes the sword is likely a prop from an old film. According to the legend of King Arthur, Excalibur is the sword given to him by the Lady of the Lake and possesses magical powers that grant its wielder great fortune and combat prowess.
The Sword and Its Keeper
After losing Excalibur in the Battle of Camlann, King Arthur was mortally wounded. Upon his death, a knight (either Sir Bedivere or Sir Griflet) threw the sword into the lake. However, before the blade could touch the water's surface, a woman's arm appeared from the depths and seized it.
Legend has it that the Lady of the Lake kept Excalibur at the bottom of Dozmary Pool, where Matilda and her family were swimming. The sword is said to remain there, awaiting the true king or queen of Britain.
The Sword in the Stone
In some versions of the legend, Excalibur is the same sword that young Arthur pulled from a stone, proving his right to the throne. Whether Matilda Jones' discovery is a mere relic or a true connection to the Arthurian legend remains a mystery for now.
