Early Life and Education

Matilda Gardeniers-Berendsen was born on 18 February 1925, to a school director in Rotterdam. Her early years were shaped by the tumultuous events of World War II, which had a profound impact on her character and aspirations.

Resistance Movement and Post-War Career

Driven by patriotism, Gardeniers-Berendsen joined the Dutch resistance movement in May 1940, following Germany's occupation of the country. After the war, she worked as a secretary in Rotterdam from 1945 to 1971.

In April 1971, a new chapter began when Gardeniers-Berendsen was elected to the Dutch House of Representatives. Over the next decade, she held several key ministerial positions, including Minister of Culture, Recreation, and Social Work (1977-1981), and Minister of Health and the Environment (1981-1982).

State Council Appointment
