Early Life and Education
Matilda Lichtenegger was born in Zagreb, the daughter of renowned composer and teacher Vatroslav Lichtenegger. She pursued her musical studies at the Prague Conservatory under Giovanni Battista Gordigiani and later with Richard Loewy in Vienna.
Debut and Munich Opera
In Vienna, Matilda's exceptional voice caught the attention of Richard Wagner, who recommended her to the Munich Hofoper. She made her debut in 1866 as Norma in Vincenzo Bellini's opera. Over the next three years, she captivated audiences with her performances in Wagner's works, including Elsa in "Lohengrin" and Elisabeth in "Tannhäuser."
World Premiere of "Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg"
On June 21, 1868, Matilda Mallinger (after her marriage to Baron Otto Schimmelpfenig Oye) made history by portraying Eva in the world premiere of Wagner's "Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg."
Berlin State Opera and Rivalry
In 1869, Mallinger joined the Berlin State Opera, where she remained until 1882. Her notable roles included Elsa in "Lohengrin," Eva in "Die Meistersinger," and Aida in Giuseppe Verdi's "Aida." During this time, she engaged in a fierce rivalry with Pauline Lucca, another renowned singer. The conflict reached a climax in 1872, forcing Lucca to leave Berlin.
Retirement and Legacy
Mallinger retired from opera in 1882 and fully ceased her concert career in 1895. Her daughter Marie followed in her footsteps as an opera singer. Matilda Mallinger passed away in Berlin, leaving an indelible mark on the opera world.
