Early Life and Basketball Career
Matthew "Matt" Doherty was born on February 25, 1962, in the United States. Growing up, he excelled in basketball and became a highly sought-after player at Trinity High School. In 1980, Doherty was recruited by coach Dean Smith to play for the University of North Carolina (UNC). He spent four successful seasons with the Tar Heels, contributing to their NCAA Championship victory in 1982.
Playing in the NBA and Wall Street Career
After graduating from UNC, Doherty briefly played in the National Basketball League (NBA). However, he soon retired from playing and joined the financial industry, working on Wall Street.
Coaching Beginnings
In 1989, Doherty returned to basketball as an assistant coach at Davidson College under head coach Bob McKillop. In 1992, he moved to the University of Kansas to serve as an assistant coach under Roy Williams.
Head Coaching Positions
In 1999, Doherty was named head coach at the University of Notre Dame. In 2000, he became the head coach at UNC, his alma mater. His tenure at UNC was marked by both success and controversy, and he resigned in 2003 after facing opposition from players.
Florida Atlantic University and Southern Methodist University
In April 2006, Doherty became the head coach at Florida Atlantic University (FAU). A year later, he was hired by Southern Methodist University (SMU), where he remains as head coach today.
Beyond Coaching
In addition to his coaching career, Doherty has been involved in other aspects of basketball, including fundraising for the Crum Basketball Center.
