Oswaldo Brandão: A Brazilian Football Legend
Early Life and Playing CareerOsvaldo Brandão was born in Campinas, Brazil. He began his football career with Internacional before joining Palmeiras in 1942. With Palmeiras, he won two São Paulo state championships, scoring 3 goals in 34 appearances. However, an injury forced him to retire from playing in 1946.
Coaching Career
Early CoachingEven while still a player, Brandão briefly served as interim head coach of Palmeiras in 1945. In 1947, he began his full-time coaching career, leading Palmeiras for two seasons.
Success with Santos and Portuguesa
After Palmeiras, Brandão coached Santos, winning the São Paulo championship, and Portuguesa Desportos, winning the Rio-São Paulo tournament twice.
Triumph with Corinthians
In 1954, Brandão joined Corinthians. In his first season, he led the team to a memorable "double," winning both the São Paulo championship and the Rio-São Paulo tournament, defeating his former club Palmeiras in the state championship final.
International Success
From 1955 to 1956, Brandão coached the Brazilian national team, winning the Oswaldo Cruz Cup. However, he was unable to win the South American Championships in 1955 and 1956.
Return to Palmeiras and Argentina
Brandão returned to Palmeiras from 1958 to 1960, winning the São Paulo championship in 1959. He then moved to Argentina to coach Independiente for two seasons.
Success in Brazil and Argentina
After a year at São Paulo, Brandão kembali to Corinthians and then again to Independiente, leading them to the Argentine championship in 1967. He also coached Peñarol in Uruguay and São Paulo, winning the São Paulo championship once more.
Back to Palmeiras and More Success
In 1971, Brandão returned to Palmeiras, where he spent four successful years. He won two Brazilian championships and two São Paulo championships. The second state championship victory was particularly memorable, as Brandão locked the team in the dressing room after a defeat and rallied them to win all their remaining matches.
Second Stint with the National Team
In 1974, Brandão was appointed head coach of the Brazilian national team for a second time. He led the team to victory in the Copa Roca and the Atlantic Cup.
Later Coaching Years
Brandão returned to Corinthians in 1977, leading them to their first São Paulo championship in 23 years. He also coached Palmeiras once more and later joined Cruzeiro, winning the Minas Gerais state championship in 1984, his final trophy.
Legacy
Osvaldo Brandão is considered one of the greatest football coaches in Brazilian history. He is the only coach to have won the São Paulo state championship with three different teams, and a special trophy named after him is awarded annually to the team he coached with the greatest success.
