Matt Hope: British Artist in China
Matt Hope is a British artist currently residing in Caochangdi, an artistic enclave within Beijing's rapidly developing Chaoyang District. His large-scale kinetic and sonic sculptures, often resembling industrial structures, have garnered significant attention.
Early Life and Education
Born in 1976 in Hammersmith, London, Hope attended Chelsea College of Art and Design from 1994 to 1996. He later earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Winchester School of Art in Hampshire in 1999, followed by a Master's degree from the University of California, San Diego.
Artistic Style
Hope's works frequently incorporate industrial objects meticulously engineered and manufactured in China, where he has established close ties with local factories. From sound systems and solar panels to vehicles and containers, Hope transforms these elements into electromechanical sculptures that both intrigue and challenge viewers.
Notable Works
Among Hope's notable exhibitions are "Spectrum Divide" at Saamlung Gallery, "Sonic Furnace" at the Get It Louder Biennial in Shanghai (2010), "People's Power Station" at the Chengdu Biennale (2011), and "Laoban Soundsystem: Infinite Baffle" in Hong Kong. His previous works include "Horn Massive" and "Microscopic Perfect Cube" (2005).
"Breath"
In 2012, at the renowned Get It Louder Biennial, Hope showcased "Breath," a bicycle constructed from disparate components and featuring an electromechanical air filtration system. While the bicycle is technically functional, it serves more as an artistic allegory, a playful commentary on Beijing's environmental issues.
