Biography of Eva Gonzales

Eva Gonzales was a French Impressionist artist who was born on April 19, 1849, in Paris, France. She grew up in a musical family, with her father Emmanuel Gonzales being a writer of Spanish descent and her mother, originally from Belgium, being involved in music.

Early Education and Career

At the age of 16, in 1865, Eva Gonzales began studying drawing and painting in the workshop of artist Charles Chaplin. The workshop exclusively admitted female students, and it was there that she honed her artistic skills. In 1869, she set up her own studio. It was during this time that she met and became a student of Édouard Manet, thanks to the introduction by Alfred Stevens. Manet's influence can be seen in Gonzales' early works, including a portrait of herself sitting at an easel with a still life, which was painted by the renowned artist.

Artistic Style and Success

In 1870, Gonzales participated in the Paris Salon with her painting "The Horn Player," which received positive reviews. This painting, as well as many others from this period, clearly shows the influence of Manet. Her early works were characterized by a predominance of dark colors and sharp contrasts. "The Horn Player" is considered Gonzales' response to Manet's "The Smoker." In the following years, she regularly participated in the Paris Salon.

During the Franco-Prussian War and the Paris Commune, Gonzales found herself in Dieppe, where she dedicated herself to landscape painting. By 1872, she had developed her own distinctive style, and her paintings became more vibrant. Although Gonzales is associated with Impressionism, she did not participate in any of the group exhibitions of these artists. She often painted female portraits, as well as still lifes and landscapes. Her artwork was also appreciated by critics such as Zacharie Astruc and Emile Zola.

Personal Life and Tragic End

In 1879, Eva Gonzales married Henri Guérard, a graphic artist and a friend of Manet. They had a son together. However, tragedy struck when Gonzales passed away on May 5, 1883, at the age of 34, due to an embolism. Despite her short life, her artistic contributions left a lasting impact on the art world.
