Early Life and Education
Matt McGorry was born and raised in Manhattan, New York City. His interest in performing arts emerged at the tender age of nine. McGorry attended Fiorello H. LaGuardia High School in New York and later graduated from Emerson College in Boston, Massachusetts, in 2008.
Fitness Career
Before pursuing acting, McGorry established a career in the fitness industry. He worked as a personal trainer, fitness columnist for Men's Journal, and professional bodybuilder.
Acting Career
McGorry's acting career began in 2011 with a role in ABC's daytime soap opera "One Life to Live." He subsequently appeared in supporting roles on series such as "The Good Wife," "Gossip Girl," and "Royal Pains." In 2013, McGorry landed a recurring role as John Bennett in Netflix's comedy-drama series "Orange Is the New Black."
In 2014, McGorry was cast as a series regular in Shonda Rhimes' legal thriller "How to Get Away with Murder," playing Asher Millstone. He appeared in 90 episodes of the show until its conclusion in 2020. The same year, he starred in the indie drama "How He Fell in Love."
Recently, McGorry portrayed Mark Higgins in eight episodes of the horror anthology series "Archive 81" in 2022.
Personal Life
McGorry identifies as heterosexual but has openly discussed experimenting with men in his youth. He is a vocal advocate for various social issues, including the abolition of police and prisons and feminist principles.
