A British man with incredible resilience

Matthew Hawksley, a welder from Huntingdon, Cambridgeshire, is known as the Man with Nine Lives due to his astonishing ability to survive. He faced a life-threatening situation in June 2011 when he jumped from a pier into the water during a trip to Ireland with friends. Unbeknownst to him, the water was extremely shallow in that spot, causing him to break his neck and his heart to stop. He was revived four times before being taken to the hospital.

A series of challenges

Following a major spinal operation, Hawksley faced two more challenges - a severe lung infection and a methicillin-resistant staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) infection. Medical professionals believed that he would never walk again, but within a few months, he was able to move on his own. However, he admitted that it was not an easy journey, especially when he had to lie immobilized with a broken neck. His rehabilitation was also challenging as he had to relearn how to walk. Despite these difficulties, Hawksley remained positive throughout the process, earning the reputation of being a 100% positive person among those who know him personally.

Overcoming cancer and looking ahead

During his rehabilitation, Hawksley was diagnosed with testicular cancer. Nevertheless, he successfully underwent treatment and is currently free of any oncological conditions. Today, having cheated death eight times, Hawksley considers himself lucky. He is preparing for a triathlon to raise funds for cancer research and spinal injury studies. He believes that he should write a book about his experiences.

Progress and determination

Although Hawksley still technically suffers from paralysis in his lower limbs, he has made significant progress in his recovery. He works with a trainer in the gym every day, and his improvement is becoming increasingly evident. Hawksley never allows himself to feel down and has developed several personal methods to prevent sadness. One of them is listening to music.

A positive outlook and facing challenges

"In a way, I'm even glad that this happened to me because now I know for sure that I can cope with any blow, unlike many people," he says. Hawksley's motto is to become better than he is now. He firmly believes that no matter what his situation is called - luck, misfortune, or fate - all he can do is accept what he has been given and strive to overcome the next challenge.

Looking forward to the future

Hawksley currently lives in anticipation of his upcoming triathlon, which will be a significant milestone in his life.
