A Heroic Act in the SubwayWesley Autrey, an American father of three and a resident of New York City, became known as the Hero of the New York Subway after saving another man's life. In 2007, Autrey witnessed a young man collapse onto the subway tracks due to an unexpected seizure. Without hesitation, Autrey jumped onto the tracks to save the young man, just as a train was approaching the platform.
A Life-Altering Encounter
At the time of the incident, Autrey, a 50-year-old African-American man, and Cameron Hollopeter, a 19-year-old white student, were complete strangers who happened to be present on the same subway platform. Autrey noticed Hollopeter's sudden collapse and immediately took action to rescue him.
A Near-Death Experience
Despite Autrey's brave attempt, it was too late to prevent the train from approaching. Fortunately, the train's operator noticed the commotion and applied the brakes just in time. However, Autrey and Hollopeter found themselves beneath the train's carriages.

While trapped under the train, Hollopeter asked Autrey, "Am I dead?" Autrey reassured him, "No, we're just under the train. Can you feel me touching you? We're both alive!" Following the incident, Autrey visited Hollopeter in the hospital and continued to think about him. Hollopeter's family expressed their gratitude, declaring that Autrey had saved their son's life. Hollopeter realized the extent of Autrey's selflessness and felt immense gratitude for the stranger who had saved his life. Their chance encounter in the subway united their lives in a profound way.
