Early Life and Inspiration

Matthew Wearn's passion for sailing ignited at a tender age of five. Inspired by the success of Beijing Olympic champions Elise Rechichi and Tessa Parkinson, who showcased their gold medals at Wearn's local sailing club in Perth, he embarked on a sailing career, foregoing the potential path of Australian Rules football.

Sailing Career

Wearn's sailing career soared with remarkable achievements. He secured silver medals at the 2018, 2019, and 2020 Laser World Championships. In 2021, he represented Australia at the Tokyo Olympics and captured the coveted gold medal in the Laser class.

Olympic Success

Wearn's Olympic triumph continued in 2024. He successfully defended his Olympic title in the Laser class, etching his name in history as a two-time Olympic gold medalist.

Honors and Recognition

Wearn's accomplishments have been met with accolades and recognition. In 2022, he was awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) on Australia Day. The following year, he was crowned the AIS Sport Performance Awards' Male Athlete of the Year.

Personal Life

At the age of 15, Wearn received an invitation to train with the Western Australian Under-15 Rules Football Team. However, due to his sailing commitments, he declined the opportunity. In 2023, he married Belgian sailor Emma Plasschaert.
