However, Behr gained the most fame in 1982. On July 20, 1982, during a fencing championship match against Vladimir Smirnov from the USSR, Behr's rapier broke, and a fragment of it pierced Smirnov's mask, causing a brain injury. Sadly, Vladimir Smirnov passed away a few days later in the hospital. This incident led to significant changes in fencing equipment and safety regulations. The requirements for blade flexibility and tip loading for rapiers and swords were also modified. In Italy, a criminal case was initiated, but Behr was not implicated.
