Early Life and Political Career
Matvei Fyodorovich Shkiryatov was a prominent Soviet politician and close associate of Joseph Stalin. Born into a peasant family, he joined the Bolshevik Party in 1906. During the October Revolution, he actively participated in the uprising in Tula.
Rise in the Party Hierarchy
In 1921, Shkiryatov assumed key responsibilities in the Central Committee of the party. He headed the Central Commission for Inspection and Purging of the RKP(b) and presented a report on the results of the purge at the XI Party Congress. This led to his election as a member of the Central Control Commission (CCC).
Purge Master and Stalin's Enforcer
From 1923 to 1934, Shkiryatov served as a member of the CCC Presidium. In 1934, he became secretary of the CCC's party college. Notably, he was the deputy chairman of the Party Control Commission from 1939 and its chairman from 1952. As a member of the party's highest control bodies, Shkiryatov is known for his role in orchestrating party purges and ruthlessly suppressing dissent within the party.
Controversies and Scandals
Shkiryatov's tenure was marred by several controversies. In 1937, he presided over a meeting where the production of butter churns with blades resembling Nazi swastikas was discussed. The case was ultimately referred to the NKVD for investigation. Additionally, documents from the Ministry of State Security in 1949 revealed that Shkiryatov had opened secret accounts in Swiss banks using stolen gold and jewels. These allegations were brought before the Politburo, whose reaction remains unknown.
Legacy
Matvei Fyodorovich Shkiryatov is remembered as one of the most ruthless figures in Stalin's regime. His reputation as a "party butcher" is based on his role in the purges and his involvement in shady dealings with the NKVD. Despite his infamous legacy, he was buried with honors at the Kremlin Wall upon his death.
