Early Life and Political Rise
Maumoon Abdul Gayoom was born in 1937 in Male, Maldives. A vocal critic of the previous president, Ibrahim Nasir, Gayoom faced multiple arrests for his outspoken views. In 1977, he was appointed Minister of Transport and, in 1978, was elected President by Parliament to replace Nasir.
Presidency and Controversies
Gayoom was a long-serving President, holding office from 1978 to 2008. He was re-elected five times during his tenure. In 2007, he initiated a referendum to introduce direct presidential elections, which he subsequently won. Gayoom's rule was marked by accusations of dictatorial tendencies, including holding the positions of Minister of Defense and Finance until 2004.
Diplomatic Initiatives
During Gayoom's presidency, the Maldives established diplomatic relations with a number of countries and international organizations. He also played a significant role in promoting regional cooperation and addressing environmental issues.
Electoral Defeat and Legacy
In 2008, Gayoom lost in the second round of presidential elections to opposition candidate Mohamed Nasheed. Despite his controversial legacy, Gayoom is credited with bringing stability and economic progress to the Maldives during his long tenure. However, his authoritarian rule and suppression of dissent remain significant aspects of his presidency.
