Childhood and Early Career

Maurice Lafon was born into a family that fled the German occupation of France during World War II. They settled in southern France, where Lafon began his football journey with the youth club Chermino. He progressed through the ranks and eventually joined the senior team of Nîmes Olympique in 1950.

Rise to Prominence with Nîmes Olympique

Lafon quickly became an integral part of Nîmes Olympique, the arch-rivals of his former club Chermino. He made his debut for the club in April 1950 and soon established himself as a key defender. Under Lafon's leadership, the team emerged as one of the strongest in France during the 1950s, consistently challenging for both the league title and the French Cup. Despite their dominance, Nîmes Olympique narrowly missed out on championship glory and were twice defeated in the cup final.

International Career with France

Lafon's exceptional performances at club level earned him a call-up to the French national team in 1958. However, his position was firmly occupied by the legendary Robert Jonquet, so Lafon only featured in four matches for France. He made his debut in the semi-final of the 1958 FIFA World Cup, stepping in for the injured Jonquet.

Later Career and Post-Retirement

After his brief stint with the national team, Lafon moved to Toulon in 1959. Despite scoring two goals in 14 appearances, Toulon was relegated to the second division. Lafon's attempt to help the club regain its top-flight status was unsuccessful, and he subsequently joined Montpellier, where he ended his playing career at the age of 34.

Following his retirement as a player, Lafon briefly pursued a coaching career before settling in Nîmes, where he opened a café and remained a respected figure in the local football community.
