Early Life and Education
Maurice Couve de Murville was born in Saint-Germain-en-Laye, France, in 1927. His family moved to England when he was seven years old. He attended a Catholic boarding school in Bath before earning a master's degree in history from Trinity College, Cambridge.
Priestly Ministry
After completing his studies, Couve de Murville trained for the priesthood at the Séminaire Saint-Sulpice in Paris. He was ordained a priest in 1957 and served as a curate in Dartford, Brighton, and Moulsecoombe. He also served as chaplain to the University of Sussex.
Higher Education and University Chaplaincy
In 1975, Couve de Murville obtained a master's degree in Assyriology from the University of London. He then moved to Cambridge, where he became chaplain to the University of Cambridge. He established the Howard House chaplaincy in Brighton in 1964.
Archbishop of Birmingham
In 1982, Couve de Murville was unexpectedly appointed as the seventh Archbishop of Birmingham. He was consecrated as a bishop and archbishop on the same day, March 25, 1982. As Archbishop, he welcomed Pope John Paul II to Birmingham in 1982, and the red chasuble worn by the Pope on that occasion is still used for special liturgical celebrations.
Retirement and Legacy
Couve de Murville retired as Archbishop of Birmingham in 1999. He was a respected prelate known for his commitment to social justice and his dedication to his flock. He died in 2008 and is remembered as a prominent figure in the Catholic Church in England and Wales.
