Early Life and Education
Born to a lawyer and a homemaker, Maurizio Giuliano spent his formative years in Italy, Cuba, Chile, and Indonesia. He attended schools in Milan and Manchester before pursuing a degree in Philosophy, Politics, and Economics at the University of Oxford (1996). Specializing in Latin America and Eastern Europe, he went on to earn a master's degree from the University of Cambridge in 1997.
Academic and Journalist Career
Giuliano's academic work initially focused on Cuban politics, particularly the impact of the US embargo. His 1998 book, 'El Caso CEA', exposed internal conflicts within the Cuban political apparatus, garnering attention from international observers. Subsequently, his journalistic pursuits took him to East Timor, Myanmar, and North Korea. He published an essay detailing his experiences in the latter.
Humanitarian Work with the UN
From 2004 onwards, Giuliano's primary focus shifted to humanitarian work with the International Organization for Migration and the United Nations. He spent several years in Afghanistan assessing the situation of Afghan refugees and supporting development initiatives. He also worked extensively in the Central African Republic, Sudan, Chad, Cameroon, and the Democratic Republic of Congo, playing a crucial role in raising awareness about humanitarian crises.
World Record as Youngest Person to Visit Every Sovereign Country
On February 20, 2004, Giuliano visited Suriname, becoming the youngest person to have visited all 193 sovereign countries in the world, as recognized by the Guinness Book of World Records. This feat culminated after years of extensive travel, spanning 11 circumnavigations and a journey along the Trans-Siberian Railway.
Post-Record Travels and Impact
Giuliano's passion for travel continued after setting his world record. He has visited an additional 45 territories, totaling 238 unique destinations. He maintains that one of the most challenging countries to enter was North Korea, where he faced numerous obstacles in obtaining a visa. Giuliano's travels and writings have had a profound impact, broadening perspectives on global issues and raising awareness about the plight of the marginalized.
