Victor de Sabata
Early Life and EducationVictor de Sabata was an Italian cellist of Russian descent. He studied at the Milan Conservatory under the tutelage of Gilberto Crepax.
Career with La Scala
In 1924, de Sabata joined the orchestra of the La Scala theater at the invitation of Arturo Toscanini. He played as the principal cellist and performed in various productions.
Italian Radio Symphony Orchestra
From 1931, de Sabata performed with the Italian Radio Symphony Orchestra in Turin, where he also served as a soloist in concerts featuring works by Luigi Boccherini, Joseph Haydn, Robert Schumann, Antonin Dvořák, and Bohuslav Martinů.
Chamber Music Ensembles
De Sabata was an active member of chamber music ensembles. Most notably, he played in the piano trio led by Ornella Santoliquido from the 1940s to the 1950s. This trio performed extensively with the orchestra "Virtuosi di Roma" and became the Roman Quartet in 1956 with the addition of violist Bruno Giuranna.
Legacy and Festival
In the later years of his life, de Sabata resided in the town of Levanto. A music festival bearing his name is held there in his honor.
