American Figure Skater of Russian Origin
Maxim Zavozin is an American figure skater of Russian origin who currently represents the Hungarian team in ice dancing, paired with Nora Hoffman. Together, they became the champions of Hungary in 2009. Maxim is the son of famous Soviet ice dancers Elena Garanina and Igor Zavozin, who performed in the 1970s. His mother is also one of his coaches.
Early Career
Maxim Zavozin's first partner was Stephanie Ellis. In 2001, he teamed up with Morgan Matthews. With both of these partners, he represented the United States internationally. Alongside Matthews, he won the U.S. Junior Championships in 2003 and 2004. They finished third at the World Junior Championships in 2004 and won the championship in 2005. In the same year, they also participated in the "adult" U.S. Championships and placed fifth.
Acquiring American Citizenship
On December 30, 2005, Maxim Zavozin obtained American citizenship. The following year, the duo finished fourth at the national championships and was sent to the Four Continents Championships, where they won silver medals. They made their debut at the World Championships, finishing 16th.
New Partnership and Representing Hungary
After placing fifth at the 2007 U.S. Championships and failing to make the national team, Matthews and Zavozin announced the end of their partnership on February 26, 2007. Following this, Maxim Zavozin teamed up with Hungarian figure skater Nora Hoffman, whose previous partner Attila Elek had retired due to injury. The new pair decided to compete for Hungary. They became the champions of Hungary in 2009, with no other dance couples participating in the championship.
Challenges and Illness
At the European Championships, the duo was in eighth place after the compulsory dance, but Maxim fell during the original dance, causing them to drop to 11th place. Due to a viral infection affecting his partner, they withdrew from further competition.
