Biography of Maxim Zhbankov
Maxim Zhbankov is a Belarusian cultural scientist, film analyst, and journalist. He graduated from the Belarusian State University, where he studied at the philosophical department of the historical faculty. In 1986, he defended his dissertation on the topic "Worldview Premises of the Formation of Natural Science" and obtained a candidate of philosophical sciences degree. He also served in the Armed Forces of the USSR during his mandatory military service.
Activities
In the 1990s, Zhbankov gave lectures to the opposition-oriented members of the "Belarusian Collegium," a group of professionals. During the same period, he provided author's annotations for films at the "Pobeda" cinema in Minsk. From 2005 to 2006, he served as the head of the culture department of the opposition newspaper "Belarusian Business Newspaper." He is a member of the editorial board of the pARTisan journal.
Zhbankov has numerous publications on contemporary culture in journals such as "Mastastva," "Fragmenty," "pARTisan," and on the website "Our Opinion." He taught at the European Humanities University in Vilnius, Lithuania, where he had a conflict with the university administration. From 2003 to 2015, he hosted his own programs on the Prague-based "Belarusian" edition of Radio Free Europe and the Polish radio station "Racja," as well as on the Polish state television channel BelSat, which broadcasts to Belarus. He also contributed to the website of the Belarusian Association of Journalists (BAJ).
Family
Zhbankov was married to Irina Ratnikova, the granddaughter of the famous Soviet Belarusian writer and public figure, People's Writer of the BSSR, and academician of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus, Mikhail Lynkov (Mikhas Lynkov). His son Maxim works as a professor at the Minsk State Linguistic University.
