Maia Tskitishvili: Georgian Economist and Politician
Early Life and EducationMaia Tskitishvili was born on June 2, 1974, in Tbilisi, Georgia. She graduated from Tbilisi State University in 1996 with a degree in International Economic Relations. In addition, she pursued studies in international trade at the Faculty of International Relations of the Prague University of Economics (1993-1994) and attended Czech language courses at Charles University in Prague (1993). She later enrolled in the Caucasus School of Business in Tbilisi in 2002.
Career in Business
Before entering the political arena, Tskitishvili held various positions in the business sector. She served as an assistant to the Director-General of the Georgia Employment Fund (1996-1997) and later an assistant to the Commercial Director of Georgian Airways (1997-2002). From 2002 to 2005, she worked as a senior manager in the commercial and operational department of Georgian Airways and subsequently as Deputy Head and later Head of the Logistics Department at Burji Corporation (2003-2005). In 2005, she became Deputy for International Relations of Cartu Group, owned by Bidzina Ivanishvili. She also managed projects for Bagebi City Group, Ltd. (2006) and served as Director of ParkTown Company (2007-2008) and Cartu Management (2009-2012).
Political Career
After the victory of the Georgian Dream-Democratic Georgia party in the 2012 parliamentary elections, Tskitishvili joined the government as Chief of the Government Chancellery from June 1, 2012, to December 2, 2014. She was then appointed Chief of Staff of the Government of Georgia, a position she held until March 30, 2018. On March 30, 2018, she became Minister of Regional Development and Infrastructure. From July 16, 2018, she concurrently served as Vice Prime Minister in the government of Mamuka Bakhtadze. She maintained these positions in the subsequent government of Giorgi Gakharia.
Briefly Serving as Acting Prime Minister
Following the resignation of Prime Minister Giorgi Gakharia on February 18, 2021, Tskitishvili briefly served as acting Prime Minister. However, she was the only minister from Gakharia's cabinet to decline working under Irakli Garibashvili, the Georgian Dream party's nominee for Prime Minister.
Retirement from Politics
Tskitishvili officially retired from politics on February 22, 2021. She stated that she wished to prioritize her family and end her nine-year period in government.
Personal Life
Maia Tskitishvili is married and has a daughter. She is fluent in English and Russian.
