Maywood: A Dutch Pop Duo
Origins and FormationIn 1979, sisters Alie and Edith de Vries formed Maywood in their hometown of Harlingen, Netherlands. They had previously performed in bands such as Ladypops, Karina's, and Colt45, adopting the pseudonyms Alice May and Caren Wood, respectively. Combining their stage names created the moniker "Maywood." Inspired by groups like ABBA, Teach-In, and Pussycat, the duo embarked on their musical journey.
Chart Success and International Recognition
Maywood soared to fame with their debut single, "You Treated Me Wrong," in December 1979. The song became an instant hit, followed by "Late at Night," which topped the Dutch charts in June 1980 and reached the Top Five in several European countries. Subsequent hits included "Give Me Back My Love" (1980) and "Rio" (1981), which also garnered widespread popularity across Europe. The duo's records were released in 52 countries, including a sole album, "Different Worlds," released by the Soviet label Melodiya in 1985.
Musical Festivals and Latin American Success
Maywood participated in numerous music festivals worldwide, performing in Germany, Poland, Japan, and South Korea. Their popularity in Latin America prompted them to release several of their hits in Spanish, gaining immense appreciation from their Latin American audience.
Soviet Popularity and Eurovision
In the Soviet Union, Maywood gained significant recognition through the TV program "Morning Mail." Their performance of "Pasadena" was featured, and their songs received regular airplay on the radio. Maywood represented the Netherlands in the Eurovision Song Contest in 1990 with the song "Ik Wil Alles Met Je Delen," finishing in 15th place.
Post-Eurovision and Dissolution
After Eurovision, the sisters recorded an album in Dutch and released three in English. However, the group disbanded in 1995 for reasons that remain unknown.
