Biography of Megan Sweeney

Megan Sweeney is an American athlete and professional luger who has been competing since 2007. She was born in Portland, Maine but became involved in the sport of luge after moving to Suffield, Connecticut. It was at the 'Verizon Slider Search' competition in her father's hometown of Saranac Lake, New York that she first became interested in luge. Unfortunately, she was not successful in her first attempt, but after a second try at a sports camp in South Carolina, Megan was able to join the national junior team.

Love for Speed and the Thrill of Luge

Sweeney's passion for luge stemmed from her love for high speeds and the thrill of extreme and risky sports. In 2006, she won the bronze medal at the Junior World Championships and became a two-time champion in the Verizon series among juniors. At the World Championships in 2008, Megan finished in thirteenth place, narrowly losing to her teammate, Julia Clukey.

Olympic Journey

Megan participated in her first Olympic Games in 1998 when she was involved in karate. However, it was in 2010, in Vancouver, that she made her Olympic debut as a luger. She secured the third and final spot on the team, surpassing her younger sister, Emily, and teammate Kate Hansen. Her victory in the qualifying race in Lillehammer, Norway earned her a spot in the Olympic Games. Despite competing against her own teammates, Megan managed to come out on top. Emily finished just two tenths of a second behind her older sister, but was not disheartened by the loss.

Continued Pursuit of Olympic Success

Although Megan did not achieve a podium finish in the women's luge event at the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver, there is no doubt that she will continue to participate in the qualifying competitions for the 2014 Sochi Olympics. Megan is determined to do her best and not disappoint her fans.
