Biography of Eva-Maria Vernike

Eva-Maria Vernike, a German luger who competed for the East German national team in the mid-1970s to early 1980s. She participated in the 1976 Winter Olympics in Innsbruck, but was only able to achieve fourth place in the women's singles event. Vernike won a bronze medal in the 1973 World Championships held in Oberhof. She also stood on the podium twice in the European Championships, earning a bronze medal in the 1973 event in Königssee and a silver medal in the 1975 tournament in Valdaora. All of her medals were won in the women's singles competition.

Post-Sport Career

Vernike retired from professional sports in the early 1980s and later became a luge instructor in Leipzig. She got married and has two daughters. After the reunification of East and West Germany, Vernike emigrated from Germany to Switzerland after two years and currently works as a secretary in Bern.
