Xu Shen, a renowned Chinese scholar and linguist, was born in Anhui Province during the reign of Emperor Zhu Yijun (1572-1620) of the Ming Dynasty. He pursued higher education at the Imperial Academy, an institution that trained elite bureaucrats in China.
Linguistic Contributions
Xu Shen dedicated his life to the study of Chinese characters. In 1615, he compiled the "Yi Zi Hui Jie" (Hieroglyphic Glossaries), a groundbreaking dictionary that organized characters based on their key components, or "radicals." This work systematized the vast number of Chinese characters and laid the foundation for subsequent lexicographical efforts.
Classification of Radicals
Xu Shen's work on radicals was particularly significant. He reduced the previously established list of 540 radicals to a manageable 214, providing a more concise and efficient method for categorizing characters. This classification system became the standard for later dictionaries, such as the "Zheng Zi Tong" (Principles of Orthography) in 1625 and the monumental "Kangxi Zidian" (Kangxi Dictionary) in 1716.
