Merav Cohen: Israeli Politician and Advocate for Social Justice
Early Life and EducationBorn in Jerusalem on August 23, 1983, Merav Cohen is the daughter of Moroccan immigrants Saadia and Solange. She grew up in Jerusalem and attended Harel High School in Mevaseret Zion. In 2006, she enrolled at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, where she earned a B.A. with honors in Economics and Business Management in 2009. In 2011, she completed an MBA with a specialization in Strategy, Entrepreneurship, and Urban Planning.
Military and Journalism Career
From 2001 to 2003, Cohen served in the Israel Defense Forces (IDF), working for the IDF Radio Station "Galei Tzahal" as a host, reporter, producer, and editor. Subsequently, she was an economic correspondent for the news website Ynet from 2003 to 2004.
Government Service and Non-Profit Work
In 2004, Cohen became the socioeconomic spokesperson in the Prime Minister's Office under Ariel Sharon. In 2005, she was recognized as one of the 100 most influential figures in Israeli business by TheMarker magazine.
From 2008 to 2013, Cohen co-founded and led the movement and non-profit organization "Itorirut" ("Awakening"). She also served as a member of the Jerusalem Municipality's board of directors and small management team for youth affairs from 2011 to 2013.
Consumer Rights and Economic Empowerment
In 2013, Cohen became the director of the Consumers Association for Fair Trade, where she led efforts to promote ethical business practices, assist businesses, and advocate for consumer protection. From 2015 to 2016, she served as the Director of Creative Economy for the Jerusalem Municipality, developing strategic plans for the city's growth and development.
Entrepreneurship and Social Impact
In 2017, Cohen founded and became CEO of Crowd Action, a startup that empowers wronged consumers to connect with others and collectively assert their rights. Since 2018, she has volunteered as head of the Campaign Against Exploitation of the Elderly, working to combat the exploitation of seniors by telemarketing and other commercial companies.
Political Career
Cohen has long been involved in social activism, advocating for affordable housing, property tax reform, and other causes. In 2019, she joined the Israel Resilience Party ("Kahol Lavan") electoral list at the invitation of Benny Gantz. She was elected to the 21st, 22nd, and 23rd Knessets, where she serves on the Special Committee on Welfare and Labor.
Personal Life
Cohen is married to Yuval Edmon and they have two daughters, Roni and Lior. She resides in the Yafe Nof neighborhood of Jerusalem.
