Brooks was born into a poor family in the Jewish quarter of Brooklyn. By the age of fourteen, he had become a notorious troublemaker in the neighborhood. He first encountered the professional stage as a writer for television shows and popular sitcoms like "Be More Careful."
In 1967, Brooks made his debut in the film industry by directing the movie "The Producers" based on his own screenplay. The film, which depicted two con artists attempting to stage a musical about the life of Adolf Hitler, was highly acclaimed and won an Academy Award for Best Screenplay.
