Biography of Melanie Diner
Melanie Diner is a German opera singer, soprano. She was born in a town near Hamburg. She studied vocal performance at the universities of Stuttgart (under Sylvia Gest), Mannheim (under Rudolf Piernay), and Indiana. In 1995, she won the International Mozart Foundation Prize at the International Vokalwettbewerb "W.A. Mozart" in Salzburg and the Edward Grieg Museum Prize at the Queen Sonja International Music Competition.
Operatic Career
In 1996, Diner made her operatic debut at the Garsington Opera Festival (United Kingdom) in the role of Ilia in Mozart's opera "Idomeneo." The following year, she successfully performed the same role at the Bavarian State Opera in Munich. In 1997, her international recognition began after receiving high praise for her performance as Fiordiligi in Mozart's opera "Così fan tutte" at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden. She also performed the role of Fiordiligi at the Paris National Opera, as well as in Ferrara (Italy), Lausanne, Dresden, and Zurich. In 2001, she made her debut as Fiordiligi in a production at the Metropolitan Opera in New York.
Mozart and Wagner Roles
Diner's reputation as an outstanding interpreter of Mozart's repertoire was solidified with her performances as Elvira in "Don Giovanni." She performed this role in new productions of the opera in Paris, London, Vienna, Munich, and at the Aix-en-Provence Festival in France, as well as at the Metropolitan Opera. She also excelled in other Mozart roles, such as Vitellia in "La clemenza di Tito" and Electra in "Idomeneo."
Diner's career also includes impressive performances in Wagnerian operas. In 1999, she made her debut as Elsa in "Lohengrin" at the Bayreuth Festival and continued to perform the role at the festival for three consecutive years. She also portrayed Elsa in London, Zurich, Vienna, and Munich. Her interpretations of Richard Strauss' operas brought her great success as well. She performed Marschallin in "Der Rosenkavalier" in Berlin and Hamburg, Chrysothemis in "Elektra" in Zurich, Monte Carlo, Vienna, and the title role in "Ariadne auf Naxos" in Garmisch-Partenkirchen.
Concert Repertoire
In addition to her operatic career, Diner has an extensive and diverse concert repertoire. She has performed Beethoven's Ninth Symphony and "Missa Solemnis," Britten's "War Requiem," Zemlinsky's "Lyrische Symphonie," Schoenberg's "Gurre-Lieder," Strauss' "Four Last Songs," Mahler's Eighth Symphony and "Kindertotenlieder," Mendelssohn's oratorio "Elijah," Berg's "Sieben frühe Lieder," Janacek's "Glagolitic Mass," and Messiaen's "Poèmes pour Mi."
Throughout her career, Diner has collaborated with renowned orchestras, including the Cleveland, Boston, New York, and Philadelphia Orchestras in the United States. She has worked with esteemed conductors such as Claudio Abbado, Herbert Blomstedt, Christoph Eschenbach, Christoph von Dohnányi, Pierre Boulez, Simone Young, Sylvain Cambreling, Bernard Haitink, Riccardo Chailly, Michael Gielen, Nikolaj Znaider, Mariss Jansons, Philippe Jordan, Kurt Masur, Kent Nagano, Sir Neville Marriner, Sir Roger Norrington, Esa-Pekka Salonen, Wolfgang Sawallisch, Christian Thielemann, Marcello Viotti, David Zinman, and Valery Gergiev.
In 2003, she participated in the performance of "Gurre-Lieder" by Arnold Schoenberg at the Bolshoi Theatre under the direction of conductor Nikolai Alexeev.
In 2012, Diner performed the role of the Marschallin in Richard Strauss' "Der Rosenkavalier" at the Bolshoi Theatre, conducted by Vasily Sinaysky and directed by Stephen Lawless.
