Born in Sèvres, near Paris, France, on an unknown date as Dolores de Padilla, Lola Artôt de Padilla was a renowned French-Spanish soprano. Her mother, Désirée Artôt de Padilla, was a famous soprano, while her father, Mariano Padilla y Ramos, was a renowned Spanish baritone.
Early Life and Training
Lola's talent was apparent from a young age. She inherited her parents' vocal abilities and received training exclusively from her mother, Désirée. Her godmother was Pauline Viardot, Désirée's mentor. By the time she was a teenager, Lola had made her unofficial debut in Paris.
Professional Career
Lola's official debut took place in 1902 in Wiesbaden, Germany. From 1905 to 1908, she performed at the Komische Oper Berlin. In 1909, she joined the Berliner Hofoper. Throughout her career, Lola performed extensively throughout Germany, as well as in Holland, Paris, Scandinavia, and Poland.
Notable Performances
Lola Artôt de Padilla made significant contributions to the opera world. She premiered the role of Juliet in Frederick Delius's "A Village Romeo and Juliet." She also introduced the title role in Ferruccio Busoni's "Turandot" and the character of Octavian in Richard Strauss's "Der Rosenkavalier" to Berlin. Strauss himself praised Lola's portrayal of Octavian.
