Melanie Doane is a Canadian pop singer and composer, known for her Juno Award-winning music. She has had seven singles reach the Top 40 charts. Doane has released a total of seven studio albums, with her latest album, 'The Emerald City', being released on March 1, 2011. The album was produced by her brother, drummer Creighton Doane.
Early Life and Musical Background
Melanie Doane was born on December 19, 1967, in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada. Growing up in a musical family, with her father, Chalmers Doane, being a music teacher and recipient of the Order of Canada for his contributions to Canadian culture, Doane was surrounded by music from a young age. She quickly learned to play multiple instruments, including the piano, mandolin, violin, guitar, and bass guitar.
Music Career
In 1993, Doane recorded an EP titled 'Harvest Train' and released it independently. The songs caught the attention of the head of Sony Music Canada, leading Doane to sign a contract with Sony and begin working on her debut album, 'Shakespearean Fish'. In 1998, her second album, 'Adam's Rib', was released on Sony. The title track of the album, which showcased Doane's vocal talents and violin skills, became a radio success and she gained prominence during the Lilith Fair concert tour. She was awarded the Juno Award for Best New Solo Artist in 1999, and 'Adam's Rib' was released in the United States on the Columbia Records label. The song 'I Can't Take My Eyes Off You' was featured in the soundtrack of the TV series 'Buffy the Vampire Slayer'.
After a promotional tour for 'Adam's Rib', Doane took a break from her music career to focus on other projects, including writing for other artists and starring in the independent film 'Black Swan' in 2002. In 2001, she released a live album, 'Melvin Live', featuring Ed Robertson from the band Barenaked Ladies. In 2003, she parted ways with Sony and signed with ActorBoy Records, an independent label founded by her husband, theater actor and director Ted Dykstra, and American actor Gary Sinise. In the same year, her album 'You Are What You Love' was released on ActorBoy Records and distributed through Warner Music Canada. The first single from the album, 'Still Desire You', reached the Top 5 on Canadian radio stations and featured moments from 'Black Swan' in its music video.
In 2007, Doane began working on her next album, 'A Thousand Nights', which was released in 2008. The album featured a collaboration with Jim Cuddy on the single 'Songbird'. The single became a hit on the Canadian iTunes Country chart, and the album, inspired by Doane's experience of motherhood, received high praise from critics. Tracks from the album, such as 'Every Little Thing' and 'Chopin Ballade', were featured in popular TV shows like 'Being Erica' and 'Flashpoint'.
