Melissa Ann McCarthy is an American actress, comedian, writer, and producer. She was born in Plainfield, Illinois to Sandra and Michael McCarthy. Growing up in a large Irish-Catholic family on a farm, Melissa attended school in Joliet, Illinois.
Early Career
Melissa began her career in stand-up comedy and later joined the sketch-improvisational group 'The Groundlings' in Los Angeles, California. In 1997, she appeared in an episode of the comedy project 'Jenny' on NBC. From 2000 to 2003, McCarthy played several supporting roles in films such as 'Disney's The Kid', 'Charlie's Angels', 'Go', 'The Third Wheel', and 'The Life of David Gale'. She also voiced a character in the popular animated series 'Kim Possible'.
Rise to Fame
Melissa gained widespread recognition for her role as Sookie St. James in the popular television series 'Gilmore Girls' from 2000 to 2007. In 2007, she starred alongside Ryan Reynolds in the film 'The Nines'. From 2007 to 2009, McCarthy appeared in the comedy series 'Samantha Who?'. In 2010, she starred in two films, 'The Back-Up Plan' and 'Life as We Know It'. That same year, McCarthy landed the lead role in the CBS comedy series 'Mike & Molly'.
