Biography of Mercedes McCambridge
Mercedes McCambridge was an American actress who gained popularity in both television and film, as well as on the radio. She was the recipient of numerous awards, including an Oscar and a Golden Globe. Fans affectionately called her "Mercy".
Early Life and Education
Mercedes McCambridge was born on March 16, 1916, in Illinois, United States. Her parents, Marie and John, were of Irish descent and Catholic. McCambridge received an excellent education and graduated from Mandel College in Chicago.
Early Career
In the 1940s, McCambridge made her first appearance on the radio, and her voice instantly captivated a large number of fans. She later performed on Broadway and made her film debut in the 1949 movie "All the King's Men". This film marked the beginning of McCambridge's successful acting career and earned her an Oscar and two Golden Globe awards for her outstanding portrayal of Sadie Burke.
Career Highlights
In the mid-1950s, McCambridge starred in the classic film "Johnny Guitar" alongside the renowned Joan Crawford. She also appeared in the western film "Giant" with the incredible Elizabeth Taylor and other well-known actors. McCambridge received another Oscar nomination for her role in "Giant".
In the late 1970s, McCambridge ventured into voice acting and provided her voice for the film "The Exorcist" in 1973. However, Warner Bros., the film studio responsible for the production, failed to credit McCambridge. She had to fight for recognition and sought the assistance of the "Screen Actors Guild". Eventually, justice prevailed.
Recognition and Personal Life
McCambridge's creative achievements were not only recognized with awards but also with two prestigious stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. In terms of her personal life, McCambridge had several marriages and a son named John Lawrence from her first husband. Her second marriage, which took place in 1950, was marred by her husband's severe alcoholism. McCambridge passed away at the age of 87 on March 2, 2004, in La Jolla, California.
