Biography of Merlin Jay Olsen

Early Life and Education

Merlin Jay Olsen was born on September 15, 1940, in Logan, Utah. He was the second of nine children and the eldest son in the family. Olsen attended Utah State University, where he became a member of the "Sigma Chi" fraternity. During his college years, he played defense for the university's American football team. In 1962, he graduated with a Bachelor's degree in finance, earning honors. Olsen was also recognized for his football skills, as he was named to the "All-American team" and received the Outland Trophy.

Professional Football Career

After graduating from college, Olsen received offers from both the Los Angeles Rams and the Denver Broncos of the American Football League (AFL), the rival of the National Football League (NFL). He chose NFL and signed a contract with the Los Angeles Rams for approximately $50,000 over two years, plus a bonus. This decision marked the beginning of Olsen's professional football career, which lasted from 1962 to 1976. Throughout these years, he established himself as one of the most talented defensive players of his time, earning numerous accolades. Olsen played in 14 Pro Bowl games, sharing this record with Bruce Matthews. He was also inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame and the College Football Hall of Fame.

Acting and Broadcasting Career

In addition to his achievements in football, Olsen pursued a career in acting and broadcasting. He portrayed the character Jonathan Garvey in the television series "Little House on the Prairie" and later starred as the title character in his own drama series, "Father Murphy." Olsen's acting career also included roles in various television shows and films. As a broadcaster, he served as a sports commentator. His final acting role was in the series "Aaron's Way" in 1988.

Personal Life and Legacy

On March 30, 1962, Olsen married Susan Wakley, and they had three children and four grandchildren. Olsen was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and held strong religious beliefs. In 2009, he was diagnosed with mesothelioma, a rare form of cancer. Despite undergoing three rounds of chemotherapy, Olsen passed away on March 11, 2010, at the City of Hope National Medical Center in Duarte, California, at the age of 69.
