Mesh: Pioneers of Electro-Pop
Origins and Early Years (1994)In 1994, Mark Hockings, a factory worker and budding musician, crossed paths with Richard Silverthorn, a synthesizer virtuoso, at a Bristol nightclub. Together with Richard's bandmate, Neil Taylor, they formed the trio MESH. Their early experiments in Silverthorn's mother's home caught the attention of "Future Music" magazine, leading to the release of three tracks on their CD supplement.
Debut EP and Label Formation (1994-1996)
Despite the initial buzz, the group's career stalled until they founded their own label, Tolerance, in 1994. Their debut EP, "Eragile," showcased their intricate blend of rock and electro-pop. Swedish indie label Memento Materia took notice and offered MESH a contract. The re-released debut EP and their 1996 debut album, "In This Place Forever," garnered critical acclaim, with the single "You Didn't Want Me" becoming a dancefloor anthem.
US Success and Acclaim (1997-1999)
American label Jarrett Records acquired the rights to MESH's music in the US. The release of the single "People Like Me (with this gun)" in 1999 propelled the trio to new heights, topping German alternative charts and earning "Album of the Month" status from "Wom" magazine. The album "The Point At Which It Falls Apart" showcased their melodic prowess and transported listeners to a futuristic urban landscape.
Stylistic Evolution and Dancefloor Dominance
MESH's subsequent albums demonstrated a notable shift towards more accessible and dance-oriented sounds. Tracks like "I Fall Over," "Self Healing Lie," and "Needle In A Bruise" became instant club favorites, blending melancholic melodies with pulsating electronics. Their live performances captivated audiences with their energetic presence and infectious rhythms.
