Foreseeing the impending German invasion, he heeded the advice of friends and left Paris. However, tragedy struck on June 10, 1940, when a column of refugees he was traveling with came under fire from an aircraft south of Paris. His life and artistic endeavors were tragically cut short in this senseless act of violence.
