Born in Dvinsk (today Daugavpils, Latvia) to Movshe Gershov, a bookbinder, and Esther Gerkhova, Mark Gershov's journey as an artist began at an early age. His family relocated to Vitebsk when he was four years old.

Educational Background

Gershov received his formal education in both religious and secular schools. He studied under renowned artist Yudel Pen before enrolling in the Free State Art Workshops, which later evolved into the prestigious Vitebsk Art and Practical Institute.

Petrograd and Artistic Influence

In 1922, Gershov moved to Petrograd (now Saint Petersburg) to pursue his artistic studies at the School of the Society for the Encouragement of Artists, where he was influenced by avant-garde artists like Pavel Filonov and Kazimir Malevich.

Exhibitions and Recognition

Gershov's first solo exhibition took place in Leningrad in 1930. As an artist, he also worked as a designer and was involved in the Window of TASS, a nationwide propaganda project during World War II. His theatrical designs for the Belarusian State Jewish Theater gained him recognition.

Gershov faced political persecution in the 1930s and 1948, leading to his exile. He was rehabilitated in 1956 and regained his artistic freedom.
