Mia Mottley: Barbados' First Female Prime Minister
Early Life and Political CareerMia Mottley was born in 1965 and entered the political arena in 1994 as an elected Member of Parliament. At the young age of 29, she became Barbados' youngest-ever minister, serving as Minister of Education, Youth Affairs, and Culture.
Ascension to Leadership
In 2001, Mottley made history as the country's first female Attorney General and Minister of Home Affairs. After the 2008 elections, she rose to the position of leader of the Barbados Labour Party (BLP). Despite a brief hiatus when Owen Arthur was elected party leader in 2010, Mottley regained control of the BLP in 2013.
Election and Premiership
In the 2018 general election, the BLP under Mottley's leadership won all 30 parliamentary seats and garnered over 70% of the popular vote. This historic victory propelled Mottley into the prime ministership, making her the first woman to hold this office in Barbados.
Economic Challenges and Debt Restructuring
Upon taking office, Mottley inherited a national debt of 5 billion Barbadian dollars. She immediately engaged with the International Monetary Fund (IMF), securing a commitment for debt restructuring.

Mottley's premiership has been marked by progressive policies, including educational reforms and the introduction of social safety net programs. Her commitment to sustainable development and climate action have also been instrumental in shaping her agenda.
