Born on June 1, 1846, Leube studied medicine at the University of Würzburg under the tutelage of Rudolf Virchow. He received his medical doctorate in 1851. Leube held teaching positions in Berlin, Zürich, and Breslau (1874-1891). Among his notable students were Emil Theodor Kocher in Zürich and Albert Neisser in Breslau.
Discovery of Pernicious Anemia
Leube's most significant contribution was his 1872 publication, "On a Peculiar Form of Progressive Anemia." In this groundbreaking work, Leube independently and comprehensively described pernicious anemia. His findings were more detailed than those previously reported by Thomas Addison, and the disease continues to be known in some circles as Addison-Biermer disease in recognition of both researchers' contributions.
