Biography of Michael Bruce
Early Life and Musical JourneyMichael Owen Bruce was born on March 16, 1948, and grew up in Arizona. He developed a passion for playing the guitar in the early 1960s after watching Elvis Presley on television. Soon after, he discovered the "British Invasion" bands such as The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, The Yardbirds, and The Animals. Bruce joined a local band called The Spiders, which eventually became The Alice Cooper Band.
The Alice Cooper Band
In 1968, along with the other band members, Bruce moved to Los Angeles. Initially named The Nazz, the band later changed its name to Alice Cooper, adopting the persona of a mad and frightening character portrayed by lead vocalist Vincent Furnier. The band released albums like "Pretties for You" (1969) and "Easy Action" (1970) under Frank Zappa's label. However, it was their transition to a harder rock sound and theatrical performances that brought them success.
Hits and Solo Career
With a contract signed by Warner Brothers and the guidance of renowned producer Bob Ezrin, the Alice Cooper band became one of the leading rock bands in the world. Bruce became the primary songwriter for the group, co-writing or independently composing hits such as "I'm Eighteen," "Ballad of Dwight Fry," "Under My Wheels," "Be My Lover," "Desperado," "Billion Dollar Babies," and "No More Mr. Nice Guy." Despite their success, constant touring and the challenges of the rockstar lifestyle led to the band's breakup after the release of "Muscle of Love" (1973) and the greatest hits compilation (1974).
Bruce expressed his desire to pause the band's activities and record a solo album, while Cooper aimed to further emphasize the theatrical aspect of their performances. This disagreement ultimately led to the demise of the band, and Bruce and Cooper embarked on separate solo careers.
Solo Projects and Billion Dollar Babies
In 1975, Bruce released his first solo album, "In My Own Way," which gained limited attention only in Germany. He then joined forces with two former Alice Cooper bandmates to form the group Billion Dollar Babies. Together, they released the album "Battle Axe" (1977), which was based on the futuristic film "Rollerball" (1975). However, the group's stage production was not suitable for the venues of that time, leading to the premature end of their tour and the dissolution of the band.
Later Career
Despite limited public attention, Bruce continued his solo career and released albums. His attempts to reunite with Alice Cooper did not yield results. In the late 1990s, he wrote an autobiographical book, providing his perspective on the history of the Alice Cooper band. The book went through multiple editions and became a success.
Overall, Michael Bruce is best known as an American rock musician, particularly for his work with Alice Cooper. He played guitar and keyboards in the band and wrote music for many of their hit songs.
