Biography of Michael Hutchence
Michael Hutchence, born Michael Kelland John Hutchence in 1960, was the lead vocalist of the Australian rock band INXS. He was born in Sydney, Australia to parents Kell and Patricia Hutchence and spent most of his childhood in Hong Kong before returning to Australia as a teenager.
Hutchence formed a close friendship with Andrew Farriss and Garry Beers, and together they formed the band that would later become known as INXS. After the Farriss family moved to Perth, the rest of the band members followed to stay together. They eventually returned to Sydney and continued working on their debut album, which was titled "INXS."
Throughout the 1980s, INXS released several successful albums and singles, with Hutchence quickly gaining popularity among fans for his wit and charisma. Despite being the primary spokesperson for the band, Hutchence maintained a strong relationship with his fellow band members and always praised their talent in interviews.
Acting Career and Personal Life
In 1987, Hutchence landed the lead role in the film "Dogs in Space," directed by Richard Lowenstein, who was also the band's manager. A couple of years later, in 1989, Hutchence released a collaborative album with Ollie Olsen titled "Max Q."
Hutchence was known for his romantic relationships with numerous Australian singers, actresses, and models, including Kylie Minogue and Helena Christensen. In 1990, INXS reached the peak of their popularity with the release of their album "X," featuring hit songs like "Disappear," "Suicide Blonde," and "Bitter Tears."
In 1992, Hutchence's life took a turn for the worse. He was involved in a car accident, kidnapped by a taxi driver during a trip to Denmark, and was later involved in a fight that resulted in him losing his sense of taste and smell. These events triggered a deep depression from which Hutchence never fully recovered.
During the recording of the album "Full Moon, Dirty Hearts" in 1993, Hutchence allegedly threatened bandmate Garry Beers with a knife. The band members revealed that they had all experienced various forms of aggression from Hutchence during that time.
Later Years and Tragic End
In the late 1990s, INXS struggled to regain their previous success with new albums. In 1996, Hutchence welcomed a daughter with British actress Paula Yates. Unfortunately, on November 22, 1997, Hutchence was found dead in his hotel room. The police determined his cause of death to be suicide, as he was unable to overcome his long-standing depression.
A few years later, in 2000, Paula Yates died of a drug overdose, which she turned to after Hutchence's death. On November 22, 2007, exactly 10 years after Hutchence's passing, the official INXS website created a page dedicated to his life and invited fans to share their thoughts and memories of him.
